The project involved the conversion of an existing office building into an apartment block, with an additional floor added to the existing building, and the construction of a new 4-storey extension for apartments with ground floor parking. The alterations to the existing building included significant structural works with steel frames utilised to ensure the load paths from the new floor were taken down to the existing foundations. The 4-storey extension was founded on a new, deep raft slab foundation, which was modelled using FE analysis, and this removed the need for a piled foundation solution. This supported a concrete transfer slab on the first floor and a lightweight steel frame structure by Hadley Steel for the floors above.

Nicole Wood
STRUCTURAL ENGINEER
Practically minded and curiously creative, Nicole brings highly valued engineering skills and a welcome challenging outlook to the team at T&G. Time spent studying and working in the field of architecture at home in her native South Africa has provided an enlightening fresh perspective on engineering – always much appreciated by colleagues.
Nicole’s role as a structural engineer involves her in specialist designing, planning and overseeing the implementation of client projects. She particularly enjoys working with the advanced systems employed by T&G including AutoCAD, 3D modelling applications such as Rivet which is also used as a building information modelling (BIM) tool and expert virtual reality solutions.
Since joining T&G in 2019 after moving to Jersey, Nicole’s portfolio of completed developments has grown to encompass a wide range of construction projects, from small residential renovations through to large scale framed buildings. Her impressive breadth of experience gained during this time extends to working with a variety of different structural approaches and materials. Nicole also leads on T&G’s commitment to the Design Engineer Construct (DEC) programme through which pupils at Island schools learn about and have the opportunity to engage with the local construction industry.
Nicole holds a BSc in Architecture from the University of Pretoria in South Africa. After discovering engineering better suited her practical nature, she went on to gain a BEng in Civil Engineering from the same institution. Since starting with T&G, Nicole has diligently applied herself to become a Graduate Member of the Institution of Civil Engineers (GMICE).

FCJ Primary School, Jersey
Carried out structural design work for planned renovation at one of the Island’s leading private primary schools and the addition of a steel frame sports hall.
Rosedale Farm, Jersey
Structural design for the sympathetic restoration and sensitive internal renovation of existing 17th century farm house.
Sunset Nurseries, Jersey
Led the design team responsible for concrete frame residential buildings with granite façades which required use of Finite Element (FE) analysis to test plans.
Jersey Gas, Jersey
Carried out detailing and modelling for the concrete frame on this extensive town centre residential development which included responsibility for obtaining quantity schedules.
One Seaton place, Jersey
Created 3D visuals and virtual reality walk-throughs for refurbished four-storey office unit prominently located within St Helier’s central business district.
